Apartment Gardening 101
If you are reading this blog and you are from Trinidad and Tobago, you know the struggles we faced with our parents and grandparents having a plant in almost every room, even if it was made of plastic! (Yeah, I see you!)
Today, that dedication to positioning plants on walls and in corners can come in handy when gardening indoors, especially if you live in an apartment.
Although gardening in apartments restricts planting huge trees, it forces you to come up with creative ways to plant your favorite herbs and vegetables that maximize the space that you do have. Many varieties of salad greens can also thrive indoors with any type of pot that has adequate drainage.
Did You Know- Filling your indoor space with plants creates a relaxing environment and helps purify the air.
The most important thing in apartment gardening is knowing what your sunlight exposure is in the various areas of your home. If you have a spot that gets full sunlight, then full sun plants can be placed there.
A few herbs that do well in indoor pots include thyme, sage, dill, and oregano.
Here are our favorite indoor gardening hacks for Apartment Gardening 101!
Balcony or patio - My mom painted empty paint containers to give them a clean fresh look and lined them up on the banister true Trini style!
Walls- Where there is a wall, there is a way! There are so many vertical garden planters that can be secured to the wall or the ceiling. The best part is they are DIY projects. Although this might be an issue for some renters or landlords some can be carefully secured using invisible wall hooks!
Windowsill boxes- This is a great option for shallow rooted herbs and vegetables. There is the option of building a Window Box for herbs or simply re-purpose old or damaged coffee mugs for some cool ornamental plants. If you still have Mason jar fever, like my friend, you can use those as well.
TIP- For small spaces, choose plants that grow up rather than out to save space.
